Travelers Rest Speedway, SC
On Saturday, August 10th, the big rigs will race on DIRT as they return to Travelers Rest Speedway in western South Carolina. This speedway is a 4/10s mile long flat dirt track with a base of red clay. Get your tickets early. Last year this was a sold out event with standing room only!
This year's crowd was even larger than last year with lots of folks standing. And for the second year racing was delayed again due to rain; a little pop up storm sat over the track for awhile. With rain comes the task of drying the dirt track by scraping a layer of mud from the track surface, then running vehicles around and around. Remember, however, this is clay - it's as slippery as ice!
Qualifying/Heat Race (by truck number)
#46 (29.402 sec lap) - #20 (30.365) - #88 (31.259) - #21 (31.502) - #41 ( 31.948) - #4 (32.205) - #16 (32.439) - #51 DNS
Morgan qualified as third fastest in #88, Mackvader. Because time had become an issue Qualifying and the Heat Race were combined, providing a start order for the Feature Race. Since it was now very late (11 pm), the Feature Race was shortened to 15 slippery laps.
Feature Race (15 laps):
Start: #46 - #20 - #88 - #21 - #41 - #4 - #16 - #51
Finish: #46 - #20 - #4 - #16 - #41 - #21 - #51 - #88
Mackvader objected to turning in the slippery corners, so #88 gradually slid from third to eighth, unfamiliar territory for this dog. There was lots of sliding and bumping by all the trucks with a few hard hits. Everyone suffered some damage and all were coated in red clay.
Nicholas Black took 1st, Jamison Gibson took 2nd, and Scott Treadway 3rd. Congratulations to all for finishing the race!
