Travelers Rest Speedway, SC
On Saturday, August 12th, seven big rigs raced on a DIRT track! This American Big Rig Racing event was held at Travelers Rest Speedway in western South Carolina. We wanted to see how the semis handle the dirt before putting all the rigs on the same track at once. This speedway is a 4/10s mile long flat track with a base of red clay.
Race day was hot with storm warnings well to the west of the track, but as race time approached the skies let loose in torrential rains sending race fans at the already packed track running for cover. When the storm passed the task of drying out the track began. All race vehicles were sent to the track where they paraded until the track was sufficiently dry to attempt racing. All events were shortened because it was getting late. The big rigs lost all practice time and their heat races. Qualifying laps were limited to three and the main race was 15 laps.
Morgan, a race driver with many years of experience racing on asphalt, was limited like everyone else to three laps at speed on the dirt before the Feature Race. The other big rig racers, however, had managed some practice laps at a teaser event two weeks earlier. Mike began the Feature Race getting a feel for the track and how his rig handled it.
This was the first time the big rigs raced on dirt and the crowd was massive, the biggest the track had ever experienced.
Qualifying (fastest to slowest)
41 - 46 - 4 - 21 - 20 - 51 - 88
The #46 spun out in front of the pit side grandstand, spewing spectators with flying mud. He had a difficult time getting back on the track.
Feature Race
Start: 41 - 46 - 4 - 21 - 20 - 51 - 88
Restart: 46 - 41 - 20 - 51 - 4 - 21 - 88
Finish: 46 - 20 - 51 - 4 - 41 - 88 - 21
The #46 took the lead from the start and stayed there the entire race. There were some "bumps" with #21 loosing a rear fender when he was hit by #51. The fender then lodged under the front of #4 for a lap before coming loose in turn 2, resulting in a restart after the debris was removed from the track. No major crashes and all trucks survived the race on the slippery track. Winners: 1st - Nicholas Black, 2nd - Jamison Gibson, 3rd - Luke Whitmire. Many thanks to Tom who served as Crew Chief.
