Hawkeye Downs Speedway 2017
Hawkeye Downs is a wide 1/2- mile oval with good lighting. Racing was intense, but only one crash/caution and that was in the A-Main Race.
Heat 1 starting order was: 54 > 7 > 3 > 14 > 55 > 16 > 27 > 26. Lots of passing with #14 moving to the front for a win.
Heat 2 began with #29 and #01 in front, followed by #88, #17, #4, #00 (Bob Boileau), and #63. The trucks went three-wide in the first turns and #88 took the lead. Morgan held the lead to win the heat.
Challenge 1 placed Rude and Morgan on the front row and that is where they stayed. Rude took 1st and Morgan took 2nd after they lapped the back of the pack. Starting order: 14 > 88 > 01 > 17 > 3 > 26 > 55 > 54.
Challenge 2 started and ended with a father-son duo on the front row (#16 and #00) followed by #7, #63, #27, #4, #29. Tommy Boileau took 1st and Bob Boileau (a substitute driver) placed 2nd.
The trucks lined up in starting order for the final race and the track was opened to allow everyone down for the autograph session. The top eight trucks in the points race for the evening were inverted for the A-Main Race. This placed Morgan's #88 in 6th behind #01 and ahead of #14. In the preliminary laps the trucks went three-wide in a salute to the fans, then moved back into their assigned positions for the start of the race. Starting order: 27 > 17 > 7 > 01 > 00 > 88 > 16 > 14 > 26 > 63 > 4 > 3 > 54 > 55 > 29.
As the race started #17 jumped to the lead followed by #7, #01, and #88 following in 4th place. #88 passed #01 for 3rd, then #7 for 2nd with #14 pulling up behind followed by #16, placing the top four overall points leaders in the top four positions. As they began lapping the back of the pack Morgan's #88 passed #17 moving him into 1st place. Morgan held the lead for twelve laps followed by #14, #16, and #17. As #88 started to pass the slower #63 the #63 truck was bumped by #4 sending him into #88. The bumpers of #63 and #88 hooked and stayed hooked along the entire stretch in front of the grandstands. Unable to make turn 1 while hooked both went into the wall which was protected by styrofoam blocks. The area was blanketed in styrofoam snow, with blocks of styrofoam wedging under some of the trucks. The caution flag came out and the mess was cleaned up.
#88 dropped from 1st to 10th position in the restart with only four laps to go. #63 left the track. The restart order was: 14 > 16 > 17 > 27 > 01 > 26 > 3 > 00 > 7 > 88 > 4 > 55 > 54. Although #14 started in the lead he quickly fell back with what appeared to be a chunk of styrofoam wedged between a wheel and fender. #16 took the lead followed by #17 and #88 shot through the pack to finish 3rd! To celebrate #88 did a few donuts in front of the stands. This was Tommy Boileau's first win and his dad was able to share it with him.
